The federal government has released details about a new $20 million plan to improve environmental monitoring in the oilsands. Alberta Environment Minister Rob Renner says the province isn't surrendering any ground to Ottawa and that Alberta officials contributed to the plan. The new plan has been welcomed by both scientists and environmental groups as a great improvement over the much criticized old one. The plan is for more monitoring stations along the Athabasca River from Fort McMurray to Wood Buffalo National Park. Officials say the new system will be able to tell if any oilsands facilities along the river are releasing contaminants.
